During the meeting Kostunica stressed Serbia’s commitment to European integration, and said that talks on the stabilisation and association agreement and EU accession will start in autumn. He added that preserving the state union of Serbia-Montenegro is the best way to enter the EU.
Bot pointed out that the preservation of the state union would reflect the spirit of European integration, adding that it is integrations and not disintegrations that the European processes are built on.
The Dutch ‘No’ vote to the EU Constitution does not imply a ‘No’ to the Union itself, or its enlargement, Bot stressed and added that he sees the state union of Serbia-Montenegro as an EU member in the future.
During the meeting, the situation on Kosovo-Metohija was also discussed, and Kostunica stressed the numerous problems the Serbian population of Kosovo is facing. He pointed out that return of displaced persons has not been achieved.
Kostunica said that Belgrade is in favour of solving all the issues through a dialogue, adding that a solution could be found for preserving the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state union. He also cautioned that every alteration of borders could have consequences on stability in the region.
Bot concluded that since his last visit to Serbia, exactly a year ago, Serbia has made progress.
