First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic said today at the Global Media Freedom Conference in London that Serbia is constantly working to improve systemic responses to the threats to which media employees meet in their work.
Dacic said that Serbia shares the global concern for media freedom and joins a joint statement with the desire that its content will experience full affirmation through its implementation in all parts of the world.
The safety of journalists and the question of the impunity of crimes against them are issues that we perceive extremely seriously and, in accordance with international regulations and in cooperation with international organisations, we are constantly working to improve systemic responses to the threats that media employees face in their work, said Dacic.
He welcomed the establishment of the High Panel of Experts on Legal Issues, as well as the establishment of working groups made up of international organisations and experts.
The murder of journalists is more than a personal tragedy; it is an attack on the foundations of the societies we live in, he said, reminding that Serbia keeps a record when it comes to journalists who were killed in the conflicts – for the first time in history, a media was declared a legitimate military goal and 16 of our public service workers died in the bombing of Radio Television of Serbia.
I take the opportunity to invite you to join forces in the battle to avoid repeating such a thing, that is, to try to ensure that no media company ever becomes a legitimate military goal, Dacic said.
