Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica met today with a delegation of French bank Credit Agricole, led by CEO Jean Laurent. Credit Agricole has recapitalised Meridian Banka with €34 million, becoming the owner of a 71 percent stake in the Novi Sad bank.
Kostunica said that there has been significant increase in foreign direct investment in the past several months and that the investment climate in Serbia is getting more and more favourable. Kostunica recalled that a series of government-proposed bills have been passed with the aim of creating legal security for investment.
Laurent said that a good legal framework in the country is crucial for Credit Agricole and he pointed out that the bank, given the large number of clients worldwide, wants to help attract more investment to Serbia.
According to him, Credit Agricole finances one third of France’s overall economic activity and has as much as 95 percent involvement of agricultural activity. It is also involved in financing the aviation industry and the hotel sector.
