Cooperation with United States in fight against terrorism, migration

Belgrade/Washington, 15 May 2019

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Nebojsa Stefanovic spoke today in Washington, as part of his visit to the United States of America, with US Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Kevin McAleenan about improving police cooperation between the two countries.

This is the first meeting of a Serbian Minister of the Interior with the US Secretary of State in charge of homeland security.

After the meeting, Stefanovic and McAleenan signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the Republic of Serbia on improving cooperation in order to prevent the travel of terrorists and fight against illegal migration.

This document will allow for a faster exchange of information on migrants and those linked with potential terrorism or criminal activities, which will contribute to greater security for the two countries.

During the meeting, the Serbian Deputy Prime Minister expressed interest in improving police cooperation, especially in the field of irregular migration and terrorism.

The interlocutors also discussed strengthening the capacities of the Serbian border police, as well as concrete activities that could contribute to the improvement of the training of Serbian police officers, which will be done in the upcoming period.

The US Acting Secretary of Homeland Security welcomed the determination and readiness of Serbia to combat irregular migration, potential terrorism and organised crime.
