First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dacic is on an official visit to the Republic of Tunisia, where he met today with the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Khemaies Jhinaoui.
After the meeting with Jhinaoui, Dacic expressed great satisfaction over his visit to Tunisia.
When it comes to the relations of our two countries, they are traditionally good. There are two pillars of our relations – one is the relations that we had half a century ago between Presidents Tito and Bourguiba. Today we are trying and have to work a lot to achieve the level of economic cooperation that we had thirty years ago, Dacic stated.
He noted that Serbia, i.e. the former Yugoslavia and Tunisia had very good cooperation in all fields.
Many students from Tunisia were studying in Yugoslavia and there were important exchanges in the field of health care and military education.
The second pillar of traditional relations with Tunisia is the First World War.
The Serbian Army passed a saga of heroism and suffering, 28 percent of Serbian population was killed. The Serbian Army did not want to capitulate, they crossed Albania on foot to the Ionian sea, after which the Allies took one part of the Army to Corfu, and 52,000 came to Tunisia. There are 3,700 Serbian graves in Tunisia.
That is our pledge for the future and I want to say that this is the beginning of a new stage of our close and strong relations, the First Deputy Prime Minister underlined.
Dacic said that Serbia and Tunisia will provide each other with mutual support in international organisations.
We support Tunisia and their fight against terrorism, as well as the fight for greater stability and security in Tunisia. In that sense, I hope that we will have better cooperation in the future, and that visits of this kind will be more frequent, Dacic concluded.
