These books have preserved between their blue covers what is most valuable and lasting not just in our culture but also exceptional works of other cultures, Kostunica said at a gathering held at the City Assembly.
They are repositories of great works that have survived the 19th and 20th centuries and should be incorporated into the 21st, which is why this donor meeting is so important, Kostunica emphasised. He added that times were difficult especially for such valuable books.
“We have gathered to help them continue their work, as our culture would be unimaginable without their books”, underlined the Serbian Prime Minister.
When asked what the government plans to do regarding changes to the Law on the Serbian Publishing House, to secure permanent financing, Kostunica said that this topic was discussed and a solution would be found, and this donor meeting is just the first step towards finding a lasting solution.
He reminded that the Serbian government provided funding last year, and promised to do so in the future, but the issue of changing the law was not touched upon.
Prior to the gathering, the Serbian Prime Minister became a donor of the Serbian Publishing House.
