The Avala telecommunications tower was destroyed on April 26, 1999, during the NATO bombardment of Yugoslavia and today’s ceremony was attended by Minister of Capital Investment Velimir Ilic, RTS General Manager Aleksandar Tijanic, and numerous other public figures.
Avala tower was designed by architects Ugljesa Bogunovic and Slobodan Janjic and used to be one of the most significant works of Serbian architecture. It was put to operation in 1965. The tower was 202.8 meters high, it held 4,000 tonnes of concrete and stood on its three legs which were leaning on foundation stones buried only 1.4 metres into the mountain rock.
