The restarting project worth $33.1 million was launched in autumn 2004, and the blast furnace number one is in use again after 18 years.
President and CEO of the US Steel Corporation John Surma said that the re-start of the furnace represents an economic turning point both for the steel plant and its workers.
Surma added that once the plant reaches its full production capacity of 950,000 tonnes, a record daily and monthly outputs will be possible by the year’s end, amounting to an estimated 2.2 million tonnes a year.
The event was also attended by Serbian President Boris Tadic, Minister of Justice Predrag Bubalo, Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Policy Slobodan Lalovic, the US Ambassador to Serbia-Montenegro Michael Polt, Serbian Prince Aleksandar II Karadjordjevic and Princess Katarina Karadjordjevic, as well as president of Pittsburgh-based US Steel John Goodish.
