Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Nebojsa Stefanovic spoke today in Nicosia with Minister of the Interior of the Republic of Cyprus Konstantinos Petridis about cooperation in the field of migration and asylum.
Stefanovic, who is in Cyprus as part of the visit of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to this country, at the beginning of the meeting expressed his gratitude to his Cypriot counterpart Petridis for the support they gave to Serbia at the recent session of the General Assembly of Interpol.
He pointed out that our country will never forget the help that Cyprus has given us in preventing the so-called "Kosovo" from becoming a part of this international police organisation.
Ministers Stefanovic and Petridis discussed the migration crisis and the measures that the two countries are taking to better respond to this challenge.
Petridis pointed out that since this summer, Cyprus has had an increased influx of migrants and added that although the total number of asylum seekers is lower compared to large European countries, Cyprus is the first on the list by the number of asylum applications made in comparison to the number of inhabitants of the host country.
During his visit to Nicosia, Stefanovic also visited representatives of the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Serbia, who are on a peacekeeping mission in Cyprus, according to a statement from the Serbian Ministry of the Interior.
