Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and Swiss Minister of Foreign Affairs Micheline Calmy-Rey met today and agreed that the upcoming signing of an agreement on investment protection and avoidance of double taxation will boost the two countries' economic cooperation.
Kostunica said that the Serbian government is firmly committed to European integration and that negotiations on the stabilisation and association agreement with the EU should get off the ground in October. He added that in light of the process of European integration, the preservation of the state union of Serbia-Montenegro is the best solution.
Speaking about the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, Kostunica said that the solution should be looked for within the framework of UN SC Resolution 1244 and with respect for the international principle of preservation of sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state union. The Prime Minister warned that any form of disintegration would negatively affect regional stability.
The two officials agreed on the necessity of decentralisation as a basis for the fulfilment of standards and protection of the rights of non-Albanians in Kosovo-Metohija.
Calmy-Rey stressed the need to preserve multiethnicity in Kosovo-Metohija and offered the experience of Switzerland in the process of decentralisation.
Kostunica expressed gratitude to the Swiss government for humanitarian aid and donations to Serbia over the years.
