Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica spoke today with European Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, who commended the Serbian government for its progress in cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in the first months of the year and announced that the EU is ready to begin talks on the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with Serbia-Montenegro on October 5.

Kostunica reiterated that the Serbian government is not in contact with Ratko Mladic nor is it negotiating with him and he added that newspaper reports about this were incorrect and that they only hindered the government’s efforts.
Kostunica stressed after the meeting with Rehn that the government is committed to full cooperation with the ICTY until all those indicted, including Ratko Mladic, are transferred to The Hague.
Rehn said that the EU is ready to launch stabilisation and association talks with Serbia-Montenegro on October 5, on the fifth anniversary of democratic changes in Serbia.
Kostunica told Rehn about the Serbian government’s stance that Serbia and Montenegro should enter these negotiations together and he handed him a document showing that there are 263,984 Montenegrins living in Serbia.
Rehn pointed to the EU’s resolve to continue the policy of stabilisation and association with the Western Balkans and he added that it would be counterproductive if the EU slowed down that process.
Kostunica, who is on a visit to Brussels, will also meet with EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana.
