At today’s session of the European Integrations Council of Serbia, chaired by Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, the Serbian National Strategy for EU accession was adopted and a proposal was submitted to the government requesting the adoption this document.
The National Strategy will form the basis for creating national programmes for harmonising local legislation with that of the EU following the signing of the agreement on stabilisation and association. The Council appointed the EU Integration Office the task of monitoring the harmonisation of activities of state bodies with the strategy’s guidelines.
The Council discussed and adopted an Information on the fulfilment of obligations stemming from the Action Plan for harmonising laws with EU regulations for 2005 in the remaining two quarters. It appealed to the government to accelerate the process of harmonising Serbian legislation with EU regulations, and to the Serbian parliament to give precedence to such harmonised legislation.
An Information was adopted on the process of creating government working groups for negotiations on the agreement on stabilisation and association and the intensification of work on establishing a negotiating position was supported. An Information was also adopted on the need to continue the campaign to improve Serbia’s image in the EU as well as an Information on an instrument for pre-accession assistance from the EU budget for the period from 2007 to 2013.
