Economic development, cooperation crucial for regional stability

Minister without Portfolio in charge of Innovation and Technological Development Nenad Popovic said today during the talks with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Pete Marocco that poverty and unemployment are frequent causes of extremism in the Western Balkans.
Popovic explained that young people without a job and perspective can easily become targets of the various extremist groups, emphasizing that economic development and cooperation are crucial in the fight against extremism and for achieving stability in the region.
Serbia is active in launching regional initiatives for cooperation in the field of innovation and IT, as we see it as a chance for the economic growth of the entire region, Popovic pointed out.
Marocco, who is also Head of the Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations, said that the United States sees Serbia as an important partner in regional initiatives to combat violent extremism, and stressed that the aim of these initiatives is to strengthen inter-religious and interethnic dialogue in the region.
