Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica met today with descendants of great Russian writer Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy, academician Nikita Tolstoy, Ilya Vladimirovich Tolstoy and Oleg Vladimirovich Tolstoy, all who were born or lived in Serbia.
Kostunica said that Russia and Serbia have always cherished traditionally good ties, particularly pointing to the cultural cooperation between the two countries. He said that Russian artists have given a great contribution to Serbian culture and arts.
The descendants of the great writer said that Serbia is their second homeland, noting that they are proud of the fact that their ancestors spent part of their lives in Serbia, a country that appreciates great artists and their work.
The descendants of Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy have visited Serbia in order to attend the opening of a street in the city of Vrsac named after a great Slavist Nikita Ilyich Tolstoy, who was born there in 1923. The street was opened on May 22.
Nikita Ilyich Tolstoy was a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and many other international academies of arts and sciences. He wrote many works in the fields of linguistics, lexicology, the history of Slavic languages and Slav mythology, but in Serbia, his works on the history of the Serbian standard language will always have special meaning.
