At today’s session the Serbian EU Integration Council, chaired by Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, discussed and adopted an Information on the current status and planned measures that the Republic of Serbia will undertake as part of the stabilisation and association process of the state union of Serbia-Montenegro’s accession to the EU.
The Council recommended that the EU Integration Office form expert working groups in order to determine the best negotiating position of Serbia in the forthcoming negotiations on concluding the stabilisation and association agreement. They also supported the intensification of harmonising national laws with EU legislature, and the inclusion of EU Integration Office representatives in the process of writing draft laws. The Council believes that every effort must be exerted in order to accelerate the process of the country’s EU accession and intends to fully support such measures.
At today’s session the Council discussed and adopted the Information on the need create the Serbian National Strategy for Serbia-Montenegro’s EU accession and supported a rapid completion of this strategy and its adoption by the Serbian government.
The Council also supported the position of the European Commission that all West Balkan countries should receive the status of EU member candidates by 2007 and decided that it would hold regular sessions in order to regularly and systematically guide and monitor the process of Serbia’s EU accession.
