Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today during talks with Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ferenc Somogyi that the position of Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija is very difficult because they are deprived of basic human rights and that it is very important to fulfil standards in the province.
Speaking about future status of Kosovo-Metohija, Kostunica said that the solution must be searched for through compromise. He sees it in granting the widest autonomy to the province within the state union of Serbia-Montenegro. He warned that any change of borders would seriously affect the stability in the region.
Somogyi endorsed full respect of the human rights of Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija and pointed out that a lasting solution cannot be found without the consent of Serbia-Montenegro, Belgrade and Serbs from the province.
The Hungarian minister said that his country fully backs Serbia-Montenegro in EU integration efforts and that Hungary is ready to share its EU experience.
During today’s meeting, the two officials discussed the position of the ethnic minorities that form a connection between the two countries. Individual and isolated incidents must not be allowed to disturb the two countries’ good neighbourly relations, Somogyi said.
They agreed that relations of Serbia-Montenegro and Hungary are on a very high level and also expressed readiness to further improve bilateral relations and improve economic cooperation.
