Russia endorses Serbia-Montenegro's progress towards EU

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica talked today with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Chizhov on several issues important for the relations between the two countries.

Kostunica and Chizhov agreed that bilateral relations between Serbia-Montenegro and Russia are very good and that economic relations are constantly improving but still are not as good as the political ones. Chizhov said that Russia endorses the preservation of the state union and its progress towards the European Union.
During the talks, the two officials paid special attention to Kosovo-Metohija, with Kostunica pointing to the importance of the role Russia plays in the Contact Group, which will soon make an assessment of the implementation of standards in the province. Kostunica and Chizhov agreed that it is necessary to make the most objective assessment of standards as possible, especially concerning the position of Serbs and other non-Albanians, democracy and decentralisation.
Chizhov said that Belgrade's role in the upcoming activities concerning Kosovo-Metohija is of great importance.
