A statement by the Ministry of Defence says that the two officials agreed that military cooperation between the two countries is the most developed part of the overall relations between Serbia and the United States, and that it still needs to be strengthened, especially through joint exercises and training of members of the armed forces.
Gasic thanked Mabus for the donations under the Foreign Military Financing programme and the Global Peacekeeping Operations Initiative, which help to equip and modernise the Armed Forces of Serbia.
In view of the financial and technical assistance of the United States to the development of the base "South" near Bujanovac, Gasic and Mabus particularly referred to the recently held exercise "Platinum Wolf 2014", during which members of the armed forces of seven countries were trained for participation in multinational operations.
The Minister of Defence thanked for the participation of US marines in the exercise, given their considerable combat experience.
The exercise has demonstrated that the military base “South” has the capacity to grow into a regional centre for the training of units for multinational operations.
Currently 214 members of the Serbian Army are engaged in these missions and we expect our participation in the UN and EU missions to double by the end of the year, Gasic said.
Gasic and Mabus highlighted military education as a very important segment of cooperation.
At the moment, members of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Army are attending courses at all levels in the United States under the International Military Education Programme.
Mabus stated that military cooperation to date has been excellent and thanked Serbia for its commitment to maintaining a high level of military relations with the United States.
The meeting was attended by US Ambassador to Serbia Michael Kirby, it is added in the statement.
