Pension system reform part of sweeping structural reforms

Deputy Prime Minister Jovan Krkobabic met today with a delegation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), led by Head of the Mission for Serbia Albert Jaeger.
At the meeting the two sides noted with satisfaction that the reform of the pension system within the previous arrangement was implemented successfully.
They concluded that the pension system is a living matter, determined by many factors, and that constant improvement and the finding of new and more favourable solutions in the system of the Pension and Disability Insurance (PIO) is necessary.
Krkobabic focused on the issues of control mechanisms, consistent monetary policy and fiscal discipline.
It was concluded jointly that the next arrangement with the IMF, if it happens, must equally apply to reform of all parts of the public sector, from public companies, health care and education to pensions, and that reform moves should be in line with European standards.
In the field of pensions, one of the major problems is the low level of employment, which means that special attention must be paid to creating new jobs.
Krkobabic stressed that the agreed principles of reform of PIO have been fully respected and that there have been no deviations from the norms adopted.
The continuation of talks with the IMF will take place at the level of expert teams, which should identify ideas for further development and improvement of the pension system.
