Opening a two-day conference "Faith and Law " held on the occasion of five years from the adoption and implementation of the Law on churches and religious communities, Sreckovic said that this is the first systemic law which comprehensively regulates relations between the state and churches and religious communities.
Traditional churches and religious communities participated in the preparation of this law which placed on healthy foundations the relations of the state with churches and religious communities.
The Minister said that only 0.5 percent of Serbian citizens covered by the census declared themselves as not being religious and pointed out that religious issues require thorough understanding.
The Law on churches and religious communities guarantees full freedom, offers a broad choice in determining the legal position in society, while at the same time it gives the right to the state to choose freely the ways and forms of cooperation with churches and religious communities, Sreckovic said.
This law has created conditions for religious education to be given importance in accordance with the social role of churches and religious communities.
The law prescribes the obligation of the state to cooperate with churches and religious communities in promoting religious freedom and achieving the common good and common interest, Sreckovic underlined.
