Number of false asylum seekers drops

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said today following a meeting with OSCE Secretary General Marc Perrin de Brichambaut that joint activities which Serbia implements with the EU regarding the issue of false asylum seekers are yielding results.

Dacic noted that the decrease in the number of false asylum seekers is encouraging, specifying that by 10 May Sweden recorded 700 asylum seekers, considerably fewer than earlier when the number stood at between 6,000 and 7,000.

He also observed that Germany recorded 200 false asylum seekers, which is the lowest number from 2004 onwards. He voiced his hope that the issue of false asylum seekers will not pose an obstacle on Serbia’s EU integration path, adding that citizens should remember how important visa liberalisation is. Dacic announced that he will hold a series of meetings with EU representatives to discuss the issue of false asylum seekers, adding that Luxembourg’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean Asselborn is arriving in Belgrade tomorrow. Belgian State Secretary for Migration and Asylum Melchior Wathelet will arrive in Serbia next week, Dacic announced, recalling that it was Wathelet’s letter to the European Commission that triggered speculations on the possibility to revoke White Schengen for Serbian citizens.
