Serbia continues toward EU integration with full commitment

Deputy Prime Minister for European integration Bozidar Djelic stated today that Serbia will continue towards attaining its key goal – acquisition of EU candidate status – with full commitment, stressing the necessity and importance of assistance from European partners.

Djelic attended an informal discussion “From Questionnaire to Exclamation Mark: Talks about the EU”, organised by the European Movement in Serbia, and referring to the announcement about possible suspension of the visa-free regime due to an increased number of false asylum seekers from Serbia in the EU, he reiterated that all necessary measures will be taken to make sure visa liberalisation is not changed. The situation is serious, but we should not overreact. We will take the necessary legal measures and Serbia will most certainly complete its share of work, but we also need support from Europe. I expect us to secure some systemic changes through this crisis. The EU integration process is not always pleasant, but in the end it is always worth the trouble, he underlined.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that it is time all important reforms were completed, adding that problems other countries stumbled upon on this path should also be dealt with.

He recalled that the “Question Mark” pub, the venue of the informal talk on Serbia’s EU path, democracy, identity, values and standards we aspire to, symbolically represents the year of 2011 which is marked by the Questionnaire Serbia submitted to the European Commission and expectations to hear its positive response on Serbia’s EU candidacy.

It is not only us who met with crisis situations, crisis is there in the EU as well, but there is a larger percentage of citizens who believe that EU integration is something positive for Serbia’s future. EU entry does not imply giving up our tradition and identity, but strengthening our positions, he concluded.

The informal discussion on the occasion of Europe Day, 9 May, was also attended by Director of the EU Integration Office Milica Delevic, Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert, diplomatic representatives and Serbian secondary school and university students, as the goal of the gathering was to hear the voice of young, educated people.
