Luxembourg supports Serbia's European path

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic met in Luxembourg with Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean Asselborn and Minister of Labour, Employment and Migration Nicolas Schmit.

Dacic told a press conference after the meeting that he is satisfied with the talks he had with the officials in Luxemburg regarding mutual relations, EU integration and asylum.

He also expressed gratitude to Luxembourg for the support given to Serbia on its European path.

This support is important in the months ahead when a decision on the status of Serbia's European integration is to be made, said the Deputy Prime Minister and stressed that the visa liberalisation for the citizens of Serbia is one of the most important achievements.

This freedom of movement can be abused too, the example of which are the so-called false asylum seekers, he said.

There is no reason to seek asylum, because there is no political repression in Serbia. Serbia is a free country, said Dacic and indicated that 95% of asylum seekers are Roma, Albanians and Bosnians, and most of them are in Sweden, Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Dacic said that in cooperation with other countries we will more effectively take measures to reduce this number, including stricter border control, public awareness, meetings with representatives of the Roma and the Albanian community in Serbia and checking whether there are organised groups involved in transfer of people across the border.

Travel documents might be confiscated from individuals who seek asylum in several countries, but this matter will be considered further, he said.

The Deputy Prime Minister said that the decision to suspend visa liberalisation process would be a bad one.

Dacic and Schmidt showed willingness to work together to overcome all problems, which is a good example of European cooperation.

The ministers welcomed the good cooperation they have. Schmidt said that a new chapter in relations between the two countries has been opened and that all problems will be solved jointly so that all Europeans could move freely, respecting the rules.
