Serbia’s visa-free regime with Schengen area not compromised

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Bozidar Djelic said today that the visa regime between Serbia and countries of the Schengen area is not compromised.
Djelic said on the occasion of the letter by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to the European Commission said in a statement to B92 that this letter does not apply to countries that have visa-free regime with EU member states.
The initiative is that countries of the Schengen Area should be given the possibility to temporarily stop the inflow of immigrants at borders.
There are no serious threats to Serbia, but we must be careful, as the issue of inflow of asylum seekers from the Western Balkans may be put on the agenda, he underscored.
He stressed that Serbia should make an effort to reduce the number of citizens seeking asylum in the Schengen Area countries, and continue working on readmission.
More than half of asylum seekers were returned to the country. Serbia will not allow Schengen no visa regime to be jeopardised, he said.
He pointed out that, in the talks with the European Commission's technical mission, it was proposed that the Schengen Area should consider the possibility that those who abuse the freedom of travel by seeking asylum should bear consequences.
