Norway assists Serbia on its path to EU

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Bozidar Djelic and Norwegian Ambassador to Serbia Nils Ragnar Kamsvag signed today a Memorandum of Understanding between the Serbian government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway.

Djelic said that this document provides assistance of about €7 million and refers to the Programme of assistance as part of bilateral cooperation in 2010.
The approved funds, worth NOK 56,241,622 (approximately €7.14 million), will be released in Serbia this year, he said and pointed out that €1.9 million will be directed towards the improvement of judicial infrastructure and €1 million to clean the soil from unexploded bombs.
Djelic said that this programme is only part of the aid that Norway is providing to Serbia and added that the primary goal of Norway is to support reforms aimed at strengthening cooperation with the EU.
Since 2000 Norway has helped Serbia with €216 million, Djelic underlined.
Serbia recognises the efforts that Norway is investing for the realisation of our European aspirations, Djelic said and expressed the hope that the country would still be with Serbia on its EU path.
Kamsvag said that the Norwegian assistance to Serbia is primarily directed at the realisation of its European course, adding that long-term assistance relates to the judiciary, defence and security, energy and environmental protection, gender equality and respect for human rights.
The Kingdom of Norway, as one of the most important bilateral donors since 1999, has offered support to Serbia in the European integration process, with special emphasis on political, economic and social reforms, the rule of law and development of democracy.
