Bradic pointed out that stelae are important cultural heritage which link countries of the region into a single cultural entity and added that more than 70,000 medieval tombstones can be found in the central Balkans.
The list that will be proposed by Serbia includes Mramorje in Perucac and Rastiste and the Greek cemetery in Hrta, he said and explained that the burial under standing tombstones was performed in Serbia during the 14th and the 15th centuries, noting that it is certain that some forms of monuments were used before and after this period as well.
The necropolis with tombstones at the archaeological site of Mramorje (also known as Bagrusa) is located in the vicinity of Perucac, southwest of Bajina Basta, on the right bank of the Drina river.
Eighty-five headstones have been registeed on this necropolis, arranged in regular rows, and they include stalea with stand and without stand, trunks with stand and without stand and two amorphous samples.
In the National Park Tara, in the place Rastiste, there are two necropolises with tombstones of the stelae type, Bradic said, noting that both sites are recorded under the name of Mramorje and they have 38 monuments.
In the village Hrta, southwest of Prijepolje, there are remains of the necropolis called the Greek cemetery which contains a total of 54 monuments.
Today’s meeting was attended by representatives of the ministries and institutions of culture of the four countries that take part in the project of joint nomination, reads the statement by the Ministry of Culture.
