Djelic said that the government will set aside funds to mark 17 centuries of Emperor Konstantin’s Edict of Milan and will form a state committee to make sure that Nis is an equal partner to Milan and Trier, where the anniversary will also be observed.
We wish Nis and Serbia to be in the focus of the European and international community in 2013, and that at that point we will have established a dialogue within religion and a place where we can talk about tolerance and joint future. That way we will promote our country’s European character, the Deputy Prime Minister observed.
Serbian Patriarch Irinej, who signed the agreement on behalf of the Serbian Orthodox Church, said that it will be beneficial if the Christian churches began a dialogue in 2013, on the anniversary of the Edict of Milan, the document that proclaimed religious equality and put an end to the persecution of Christians.
It will be good if church representatives gathered and began a friendly dialogue, while other issues among them can be solved later on, the Patriarch noted, adding that the East and West, Rome and Constantinople, have been on separate paths for a long time and cannot resolve their issues over night.
Nis Mayor Milos Simonovic said that works on the construction of a complex, dedicated to Emperor Konstantin the Great, will begin in 2011 and will be completed before the anniversary of the Edict of Milan.
A cross, that will be visible from all parts of Nis, will be built on Vinik hill, at 400 metres above sea level.
The cross will be 80 metres high and 40 metres wide, made of metal, with an elevator and two platforms.
The complex will span 13 hectares and will comprise a hotel, a museum dedicated to Emperor Konstantin, an amphitheatre, a cinema, a media centre and a souvenir shop.
The funds will be secured from donation, and the decision to erect the cross was made around the end of 2009.
