Representative works of Petar Dobrovic, Kosta Milicevic, Milos Golubovic, Nadezda Petrovic, Beta Vukanovic, Paja Jovanovic, Uros Predic, Djure Jaksic, Katarina Ivanovic and others are on display at the SANU gallery.
Speaking at the opening of the exhibition, Bradic quoted Rastko Petrovic, “only when we learn the language of Europe will we be able to recognise our own values and present them to Europe.”
He also said that this exhibition shows how quickly Serbian artists absorbed the European sensibility
The value of our artists, said the Minister of Culture, does not lie in the fact that they were educated, well travelled and lived throughout Europe, rather in that they were able to successfully integrate European influences into their own work and thus open Europe to Serbian art.
Bradic said that at the beginning of the 20th century Nadezda Petrovic and Petar Dobrovic were working in Paris.
Petrovic’s style is what later became known as expressionism and Dobrovic’s cubism, and they were soon joined by a host of other artists, said Bradic.
He said that he is convinced that this dynamic exhibition, which will last until October 8, will attract thousands of people from Serbia and abroad.
Academic Dinko Davidov said that the exhibition presents the richness and variety of art from the second half of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century.
The exhibition covers the period from 1850 to 1950 and was arranged by the curators of the National Museum Ljubica Miljkovic, Gordana Stanisic and Petar Petrovic.
The exhibition also offers a 220 page catalogue giving information about the artists and their works.
The exhibition was at the National Museum of Romania in Bucharest before arriving in Belgrade.
