First science development strategy in Serbia to be adopted

Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic announced today that Serbia will finally have its first framework science development strategy.

At the session of the Belgrade University senate, Djelic recalled that on December 26 last year the first draft of this strategy was presented, which is of huge importance for the overall development of the sciences.
Djelic, who addressed the senate on occasion of Universiade 2009, said that the date of this competition cannot be changed on account of demands by the students who will have to move out of their student accommodation during the Universiade.
The issue of students’ accommodation will be solved, said Djelic, explaining that the Ministry of Education has secured temporary accommodation for all students during the Universiade.
He noted that this huge event will require adjustments not only from faculties, but also from communal services, airport capacity and similar, adding that this is why the second semester of this academic year must be adjusted to Universiade.
Universiade is the largest sport event solely for students. It will be held with the help of 15,000 volunteers, recalled Djelic, reiterating that Serbia expects to gain RSD 2.6 billion from the trade of goods and services during the competition, which is why it is in everyone’s interest to make this event a success.
The budget for Universiade is smaller since it has been reduced because of the economic crisis, said the Deputy Prime Minister, voicing his hope that in the end the organisers will be satisfied. He added that everyone will do their part in the best possible way.
He specified that around 28,000 students will take part in the Universiade, adding that they represent the future elite and will have a unique opportunity to see Belgrade, Serbia and its people.
According to him Belgrade would suffer incalculable international damage if it fails to organise this event properly, which would affect not only all future sport events, but also all university-related and other international projects. This is why it is crucial that we show the world we are a reliable partner, he added.
Djelic noted that thanks to the Universiade, Belgrade will be host to a Chancellors’ Conference on April 2–5, announcing that at the conference he and Minister of Education Zarko Obradovic will invite regional and European ministers of science and education to attend the opening of the Universiade.
According to him, during the Universiade a bilateral agreement on cooperation with the Czech Minister of Science will be signed.
