Djelic declares 2009 International Year of Astronomy in Serbia

Deputy Prime Minister for EU Integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic tonight officially declared 2009 the International Year of Astronomy in Serbia.
At the ceremony at the Faculty of Chemistry, Djelic announced that the Ministry will support astronomers in the strained conditions of the economic crisis to ensure that knowledge remains among top state priorities.
Djelic stressed the importance of the large number of scientific projects in Serbia, adding that a meeting will be held tomorrow to discuss the possibilities for financing them.
He invited all scientific workers to work with the Ministry of Science and Technological Development on development projects.
According to him 2009 will be an excellent opportunity to support worthwhile projects and the Ministry will be open to all scientists.
Djelic also announced work on the Vidojevica observatory near Prokuplje, which should be completed next year at the latest and presented activities to be realised as part of the International Year of Astronomy in Serbia.
At its 62nd session the UN adopted the resolution according to which 2009 was declared the International Year of Astronomy, officially announced in Paris this January.
The occasion for this celebration is the anniversary of an important historic event, 400 years since Galileo Galilei first saw space through a telescope.
Astronomy will be celebrated worldwide, with a particular emphasis on its contribution to society, culture and education.
