Expanded free trade agreement between Serbia, Russia from March

Serbian First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said today that the expanded free trade agreement between Serbia and Russia will come into force in March.
Speaking at a visit to the Sintelon company in Backa Palanka, which was earlier visited by a Russian delegation, Dacic said that he is convinced that trade between Serbia and Russia will increase significantly as a result of the agreement.
He said that the Serbian government’s aim is to double trade with Russia over the next few years, adding that he hopes that soon the goods list covered by the free trade agreement will be expanded even further.
He said that Serbia expects the energy agreement with Russia to have a great deal of positive effects.
He said that the energy agreement will increase regional energy stability and the recent gas crisis between Russia and Ukraine has shown that building the South Stream gas pipeline is necessary.
Dacic said that the agreement will also help deal with the effects of the global financial crisis.
He said that it can be expected that cooperation between Serbia and Russia will extend to electricity production as well as cooperation in projects for building the hydroelectric power plant Djerdap and the construction of a metro rail system in Belgrade.
Dacic expressed support for Sintelon’s decision to invest more than €300 million in Russia, where it already has a factory, adding that he hopes that the financial crisis will not affect this plan.
Dacic, who also co-chairs the Serbian-Russian political committee together with Russian Minister for Emergency Situations Sergey Shoigu, announced that this year’s session will be held in Serbia.
Russian Ambassador to Belgrade Alexander Konuzin said that Sintelon is a big company whose products are exported to Russia.
He also described Sintelon as one of the rare Serbian investors in Russia.
Konuzin suggested the establishment of joint Serbian-Russian small and medium-sized companies and announced that the Russian-Serbian business council will hold its second session in Moscow soon.
General Manager of Sintelon Nikola Pavicic said that Sintelon has a 35 year long cooperation with Russia.
As part of multinational company Tarkett, Sintelon is present on other markets worldwide as well, he said.
