International community must provide security in Kosovo-Metohija

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Ivica Dacic today stated that the situation in Kosovo-Metohija in security terms is unstable and pointed out that it is up to the international community to ensure public peace and order in the province.

During his visit to the University village in New Belgrade, Dacic said that a bomb attack on the Kosovo security forces’ headquarters near Pec is proof that the security situation in Kosovo is under serious threat and pointed to a large number of former terroristic groups which have been retrained.

The Minister recalled that Serbia has allowed the international forces to take care of peace, stability and security in its southern province since the Serbian police cannot operate in that part of its territory according to the Kumanovo agreement.

Dacic stressed that in case the international community is not able to provide security in Kosovo-Metohija, Serbia will be ready to help, adding that Serbia is constantly fighting for Kosovo through diplomatic means.

Dacic said that 230,000 new passports have so far been issued, adding that over one million citizens are yet to replace their old passports with the new ones.

The deadline for this has been put off until the year’s end, said the Minister, explaining that the Ministry’s capacity is 50,000-60,000 passports per month.

The Ministry of the Interior will take into consideration the objections submitted by ombudsman Sasa Jankovic pertaining to the inefficiency in replacing citizens’ documents, said Dacic, adding that the greatest problem are the long queues.

Dacic said that security for the Universiade 2009 village will be on a very high level, adding that big sporting events are a potential security risk.

President of the Universiade executive committee Nebojsa Ilic said that work on the village is going as planned and that the accommodation will be top quality.
