European Commission to discuss Serbia’s visa liberalisation

Deputy Prime Minister for EU Integration Bozidar Djelic today said that this May the European Commission will declare its first stance on Serbia’s visa liberalisation, adding that its positive opinion on the matter is very important.

Appearing on Radio Television Serbia, Djelic said it is important that the Czech Republic, as the presiding country for the next six months, is informed of Serbia’s activities, adding that Serbia’s goal is to have the European Commission declare its positive stance on Serbia’s EU integration by the end of the year.

Prior to leaving for the Czech Republic, where he will meet with the Czech Prime Minister, Minister of Science and representatives from leading energy companies, Djelic said it is crucial that Serbia remains active in order to keep the integration of the Western Balkans in the limelight.

During his stay in the Czech Republic, Djelic will present Serbia’s visa liberalisation action plan for the first three months of 2009, consisting of 22 items.

The Deputy Prime Minister said that this year the EU has earmarked €190 million support for Serbia, adding that the funds will be used for local infrastructure.

When the implementation of the arrangement with the IMF begins in March, we will start the talks in order to get at least another €400 million for macro financial support, as well as the €190 million, stressed Djelic.
