Police to get better conditions in Ground Safety Zone

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said that the police in the Ground Safety Zone are doing a difficult job of the utmost importance for the state and its citizens.

Dacic visited the police department in Rudnica, in the police administration area for Kraljevo and Novi Pazar.

He thanked police members for keeping public order and peace and preventing terrorist acts, smuggling and crime.

The Minister asked the police to simplify the transit procedure on the crossings with Kosovo to avoid crowds.

Dacic announced he will try to provide better conditions for police officers in the Ground Safety Zone.

The authorities reported to the Minister that security and public order in Rudnica is stable but there are some problems such as illegal trade and smuggling.

They also said that in the Ground Safety Zone administered by the Kraljevo Police administration there have been minor offences of public peace and order and informed the Minister about seized contraband, such as oil derivatives, sugar, meat products, cigarettes etc.

Goran Todorovic, a representative of the Raska police station, in charge of the Rudnica check point, said that the police have established extremely satisfactory cooperation with the Serbian Army, customs organs and inspectorates, as well as local self-governments.

He noted that there is also good cooperation with KFOR and UNMIK but said that the police in the Ground Safety Zone are faced with shortages of all-terrain vehicles and computer equipment.

Dacic also visited the Novi Pazar police administration and said that safeguarding security in the municipality of Novi Pazar is extremely important for the entire country. He stressed that the police do not recognize ethnic differences.

Speaking to representatives of the local authorities, the judiciary and the police, Dacic said that the main tasks of the police are to preserve peace and order, to ensure public safety and to fight against crime.

The Minister said that the Serbian government and the Ministry of the Interior will fully support efforts to ensure equal rights and security for everyone regardless of their ethnic identity.

Dacic said that it is necessary to build confidence between the public and the police, adding that campaigns will be arranged to this purpose.

He explained that the inclusion of minorities in all police bodies is one of the priorities of the Interior Ministry. He recalled that a project for organizing local police forces has already been launched in cooperation with the OSCE.

Director of the police administration Milorad Veljovic said that preserving peace and order and ensuring public safety is a priority for the police.

He stressed that the police will make every effort to make the residents of Novi Pazar feel safe and secure and will not allow law and order to be jeopardized.

Dacic will wrap up his visit to the Ground Safety Zone at Tabalije base where he will celebrate the Orthodox New Year with members of the gendarmerie.
