Serbia to make considerable progress on its EU road in 2009

Deputy Prime Minister for EU Integration Bozidar Djelic said he expects that Serbia will make considerable progress on its EU path and achieve visa abolition by the end of 2009.
In an interview with Radio Television B92, Djelic said that the implementation of the Transitional Trade Agreement is the first step in this respect.
As for the statement that visa abolition and Serbia’s EU candidacy may be postponed for 2010, the Minister said that Serbia’s progress in this respect has been positively evaluated.
Djelic recalled that following the European Commission’s report on Serbia’s progress, the government adopted an action plan comprising approximately 40 items, which must implement by March 2009.
European experts will visit Serbia in February or March and adopt the report in May at the latest, after which they will make decision. I am convinced that despite all obstacles Serbia will head the list of countries which are waiting for visa liberalisation, said Djelic.
As for EU loans, the Minister said that French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced the rebalance of the EU budget for 2009, adding that Serbia, together with its Western Balkan neighbours has already started an initiative in this respect.
