Technology priorities to be specified

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic said today that his ministry in cooperation with scientists and experts will begin work on preparing a list of science and technology priorities for 2009.
In a statement to the Tanjug news agency Djelic said that after the completion of the list in autumn next year, for the first time a scientific projects competition will be announced according to the priorities.
He said that a meeting will be held tomorrow with representatives of the scientific community, at which the Council for Science and Technology will present the strategy for scientific development which will serve as a framework for preparing the priorities list.
Speaking about plans for the next year the Deputy Prime Minister said that more attention will be paid to building science infrastructure and to improving work conditions for scientists.
Negotiations have begun with the European Investment Bank concerning a loan arrangement for building science infrastructure and we are planning to complete flats for scientists in New Belgrade, Djelic said.
He said that Serbia sets aside 0.3% of the GDP for investments in science which is two to three times less than in neighbouring countries and five to seven times less than other European countries.
Djelic recalled that significant efforts were made to improve the financial position of scientists and salaries were increased for employees in various scientific institutions.
He said that today Serbia has nearly 8,000 scientists and according to European standards there should be twice as many, adding that in cooperation with the Ministry of Education efforts will be made to guide young people to fields of expertise important for the country.
He said that with this aim in mind a meeting titled “Science and Technology: priorities, plans and possibilities in 2009”, will be held tomorrow, at which participants will include heads of scientific and research institutes, university rectors and deans, directors of technology companies and representatives of regulatory agencies.
