HP mobile laboratory opens at Faculty of Sciences in Novi Sad

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic was present today at the opening of the Hewlett Packard (HP) mobile laboratory at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in Novi Sad.
Djelic voiced hope that, despite the global economic crisis, Serbian parliament will adopt the 2009 budget by the end of the year, as it is of importance for Serbia’s technological development.
He stressed that the best way to easily and efficiently surmount the current crisis is to continue investing in the future.
The Minister stressed that knowledge should be the first item on the agenda, adding Serbia cannot rely only on the state budget concerning the development of the sciences and the educational system.
The domestic economy should be mobilized in this respect as much as possible and efforts should be made during the next two to three years to get EU funds and donations similar to the US donation, said Djelic adding that all resources will be used in order to create the best possible conditions for Serbian scientists.
US Ambassador to Serbia Cameron Munter said that he is pleased that the donation to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, which includes HP equipment worth $80,000 and $20,000 for project implementation, marks a form of cooperation between the Faculty and HP, of which the US is very proud.
Munter stressed that this and similar projects are the best form of partnership between the US and Serbia, adding that other scientific institutions in Serbia will also get the US embassy’s support if they launch initiatives similar to the Faculty’s.
The Faculty secured fourth place in a competition held by HP titled “Technology for Education”, in which 80 universities from all over the world took part.
The equipment presented to the Faculty makes it possible to adopt a new and modern approach to teaching.
HP Director Slobodan Radic said that HP has been present in Serbia for six years, adding that the company has invested $600,000 in equipping educational and scientific institutes in Serbia up until now.
