Serbia, Italy sign agreement on cooperation against organised crime

Serbian First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic and Italian Minister of the Interior Roberto Maroni signed today in Rome a bilateral agreement on cooperation in the fight against organised crime, drug trading and international terrorism.

Dacic, who is on a visit to Italy, told FoNet that the agreement reflects the necessity for strong cooperation between Serbian and Italian police.
According to Dacic, the agreement includes the exchange of liaison officers and information, joint personnel training and help to the Serbian police for upgrading equipment.
He said that organised crime is present in both Italy and Serbia, which makes it necessary for the police services of the two countries to have close cooperation.
We have signed bilateral police cooperation agreements with many countries in the region, for instance Greece, Romania and Bulgaria and we wish to establish cooperation with all countries that we need to work with, said Dacic.
He said that a police cooperation agreement should be signed with the Czech Republic at the beginning of January 2009, which is very important because the Czech Republic is due to assume the EU presidency then.
The Minister said that Italy’s support for liberalizing visa restrictions and for Serbia’s further EU integration is very important for Serbia.
Dacic said that the Serbian police and Ministry of the Interior are important factors in the stability of the entire region, adding that it was at Serbia’s initiative that a joint meeting of the interior ministers of the republics of the former Yugoslavia was recently held.
