Amendments to law on travel documents to be adopted soon

Serbian First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic today said he expects that the Serbian parliament will approve amendments to the law on travel documents by the end of this year, according to which the expiry date of old valid passports will be extended until the end of 2009.
Speaking to the press Dacic said that the law on travel documents which stipulates that old passports are valid until the end of this year was passed one year ago, adding that directly after assuming office as Interior Minister he approved a demand for extending this deadline, because it was impossible to replace all the old passports by the end of this year.
The Minister appealed to the public to submit applications for new passports as soon as possible so that there are no problems next year when old passports are no longer valid. He specified that nearly 160,000 applications for new passports have been submitted up until now.
Dacic also appealed to MPs to adopt the amendments so that Serbian citizens may travel unhindered.
The MPs today completed the debate on amendments to the law on travel documents.
