Water plant in Indjija opens

Deputy Prime Minister for EU Integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic, Head of the European Commission Delegation to Serbia Joseph Lloveras and Indjija Municipal President Goran Jesic today opened a new water factory in Indjija.

The investment is worth €7.6 million, €2.4 million of which was financed from EU funds and the rest from the municipality budget, the Vojvodina Capital Investments Fund and the National Investment Plan.

Djelic said that the opening of this plant is an example of what the benefit from the EU is for Serbian citizens, noting that the opening of this plant and the improvement of the infrastructure will further improve conditions for investment in Indjija.

He recalled that Serbia can compete for over €1 billion from EU’s IPA fund support.

Jesic said that the city infrastructure has been improved considerably and that water, power and communication improvements are necessary for attracting investment.

He announced similar projects in the upcoming period, including the construction of a regional waste terminal, in cooperation with the neighbouring municipalities of Stara Pazova and Pecinci.

Lloveras voiced his pleasure at Serbia’s successful cooperation with the EU on infrastructure development projects in local self-governments, adding that he is pleased that the citizens of Indjija will now have drinking water processed according to European standards.

The water plant will operate within the local water and sewage company Vodovod i Kanalizacija and its capacity is 150 litres per second.

Around RSD 600 million have so far been invested in Indjija to solve its water supply issue for the next 20 years.

Djelic and Lloveras also met with businessmen from Indjija to discuss potential problems which might arise due to the global crisis.

They were informed that there have not been any lay-offs in Indjija, although a solution must be found to ensure that agreements on ongoing projects, in which European banks are also taking part, are carried out as planned.

Djelic briefed the businessmen about government measures and affirmed that every municipality in which investments have been realised and results achieved when it comes to creating new jobs, will have the government’s support.
