Funds for technological development to be utilised for priority purposes

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic today said that the funds intended for scientific and technological development will be used for resolving specific problems in these areas.

Presenting the budget for technological development to a parliamentary committee Djelic said that funds allocated for science and technology amount to 0.3% of the GDP.
He said that the Ministry had increased the salaries of researchers employed in various institutions by nearly 30% this year, thus eliminating the difference between the salaries of researchers and university employees.
The Minister said that funds to be set aside for science next year will help increase salaries for scientists by 8%.
He said that Serbia will allocate $25 million for resolving problems in the Vinca Institute which are not related to scientific issues but to nuclear safety and ecology.
He said that he hopes next year an inter-state agreement will be signed between Russia and Serbia concerning the removal of spent nuclear fuel, to be completed by 2010.
Owing to the efforts made by the Ministry of Science the European Investment Bank will provide funds for the scientific infrastructure. Similarly, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development will help form a fund for financing innovative enterprises and the World Bank will finance a programme for restructuring scientific networks and strengthening links between science and the economy, explained the Minister.
He said that the Ministry of Science will also launch an initiative to transform the 25 May Museum into a centre for science and innovation.
