Police cooperation important for entire former Yugoslavia region

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said in Vienna today that police cooperation in the fight against organised crime is important for the entire region of former Yugoslavia because organised crime is perilous for all states.

At a conference of the Establishment of International Law Enforcement Coordination Units (ILECUS) project, taking place in Vienna, Dacic said that the agreement reached under Austria’s auspices is a crucial moment for the issue.
The EU’s initiative to unite all communication lines regarding police cooperation has existed for a long time. It implies setting up a centre in each country which will cooperate with the police. The exchange of information is crucial for the fight against organised crime and it should be carried out safely, explained the Deputy Prime Minister.
He said that Romania and Slovenia will help implement this project and announced that an organisational unit in Serbia will be established soon.
This cooperation is vital for the fight against organised crime, Dacic said.
Regardless of different political positions and regardless of state and national differences, countries of the former Yugoslavia are exchanging information quickly, Dacic said, giving the example of Ivo Pukanic, the reporter from Zagreb who was killed.
Serbia has signed a series of bilateral agreements, he said, also announcing he will sign a memorandum on police cooperation on December 12 with his Croatian counterpart, Tomislav Karamark.
The Vienna conference also included Austrian Minister of the Interior Maria Fekter as well as representatives from the European Commision, Romania, Slovenia, Europol and Interpol.
