Measures to mitigate effects of global financial crisis

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Regional Development Mladjan Dinkic said today that Serbia’s financial system has managed to defend itself from the global financial crisis but now it is important to assist the economy to minimize the effects of the crisis.
At a ceremony held at the Serbian Chambers of Commerce, Djelic presented the Oscar of Quality 2008, Serbia’s business excellence award, to representatives of award winning firms and said at the occasion that public expenditure will be cut in next year’s budget but business incentives will be increased.
He said that the global financial crisis will force the government to economize, to make every effort to increase exports, improve the quality of products and to place products on new markets in Asia and North Africa.
The Minister said that fulfilling quality standards is essential to the economic development of the entire country and it opens up doors to the European market, adding that it will be Serbia’s priority to increase exports, considering the fact that it is becoming impossible to finance the growing deficit in the balance of payments.
Dinkic said that the government has approved the laws on the assessment of product technical standards harmonization, food safety and the draft law on standardization.
He said that it is important to pass these laws as soon as possible because the implementation of these laws is a condition for Serbia’s inclusion into the World Trade Organization and quicker EU accession.
Dinkic said that the socially owned companies Jugoinspekt and Kvalitet will remain in social ownership because of their importance but foreign companies will be allowed to compete in with them.
