Serbia EU member by 2014

Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration, Bozidar Djelic, stated last night in Istanbul that Serbia will become an EU member by 2014, adding that six years is the maximum period which Serbia and governments of neighbouring countries find acceptable for EU accession.

Speaking at the International Economic Forum on Europe and Central Asia in Istanbul, Djelic said that the CEFTA agreement on free trade is functioning quite well and that Central Europe has the fastest economic growth rate in Europe.
As for the statement by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso that Serbia may acquire candidate status in 2009, Djelic said that changes in Serbia have made the "pro-European core" the dominant and strongest domestic political group.
He said that EU members need courage when it comes to relaxing Serbian visa requirements.
The EU accession process can take years, but we can give people the freedom to travel in one single day and they will immediately feel the benefit of that, said Djelic.
During the day, Djelic met with European Commission Vice President Jacques Barrot, who confirmed that his report on visa liberalisation for Serbia will be positive, adding that Serbia’s continued cooperation with The Hague Tribunal is important in this respect.
According to Djelic, Barrot said that as for Serbia, the European Commission’s annual report will include the effects of implementing macroeconomic stability and stressed it is of key importance that the set of laws on the judiciary is adopted by Serbian parliament.
Following several meetings with Turkish representatives Djelic said they are interested in investing in energy, infrastructure and industry.
At the forum he also met with top officials from Turkish companies Koc, Dugan, Sabanci and Enka and with Turkish ministries in charge of the economic sector. They discussed the construction of Corridor 10 and the inclusion of Turkey in the project.
Turkish companies want to take part in the construction, as well as a number of other services which accompany such roads, said Djelic.
He noted that representatives of Turkish companies also showed interest in various industries in Serbia, for instance Sabanci is interested in investing in truck production, cement industry and the manufacture of tyres.
Djelic is taking part in the International Economic Forum on Europe and Central Asia in Istanbul from October 30 where he is representing Serbia on its EU road and in talks about improving bilateral relations with Turkey.
