Serbian Minister of Science and Environmental Protection Aleksandar Popovic yesterday visited a garbage dump under construction at Vujan Mountain, near Gornji Milanovac, announcing that four new laws in the field of environmental protection will be adopted soon.
In order to solve the problem of utility waste, the Serbian government has launched a campaign of building regional dumps that will cover the needs of 200,000 to 300,000 inhabitants. The campaign will require 61 million dinars.
The Minister pointed out that the dump in Gornji Milanovac is not a classic regional dump. The Norwegian government donated $1.1 million for its construction, and the local government an additional 20 million dinars.
Popovic promised that the government will offer assistance in the further construction process.
Speaking about the new environmental legislation, Popovic said that four laws will enter parliamentary proceedings in the next two weeks. He pointed out that laws passed between 1992 and 1996 are currently in force.
