Serbia could acquire EU candidate status in 2009

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Regional Development Mladjan Dinkic met today in Brussels with EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn to discuss the acceleration of Serbia’s EU integration process and implementation of the transitional trade agreement with the EU.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Economy and Regional Development, Dinkic and Rehn said at a joint press conference in Brussels that Serbia has a bright future in the EU as long as it continues its economic reforms.
Rehn confirmed that Serbia could receive EU candidacy status in 2009, and said that the implementation of the trade agreement will help Serbia gain experience and bring it closer to the EU.
Dinkic said that he is pleased that Rehn supports accelerating Serbia’s EU integration process, adding that a lot will depend on the Serbian government.
The Serbian government’s priority is to acquire candidate status during the next year. It is also expected that a set of laws will be passed in the Serbian parliament to speed up the process of Serbia’s inclusion in the White Schengen List, said the Deputy Prime Minister.
He said that it is a very significant fact that the EU Enlargement Commissioner has encouraged Serbia to achieve these two goals during the next year.
Dinkic said that he informed Rehn about Serbia’s plans to build more infrastructures, particularly Corridor 10.
