Serbia may sign one-year arrangement with IMF

Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic said yesterday in Washington that due to strenuous circumstances in global economy there is a possibility that Serbia attracts investors who are now having difficulties doing business in other countries.

Djelic told the Beta news agency that there are two conditions for that.
The first condition and the main reason for our arrival to the annual assembly of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is to round up financing our key infrastructure projects, primarily Corridor 10, said Djelic and added that Serbia will like to reach an agreement with the World Bank to set aside two-thirds for Corridor 10 of the total $600 million, as well as to increase this amount next year by another $200 million.
Serbia will also ask for €500 million from the European Investment Bank for the same purpose, because it will strengthen competitiveness in a cheap and sustainable way in a situation when there is less capital whose price is rising.
Our second goal is to send a message of our stability considering the grave situation in the world. This will imply that we have a very responsible budget for 2009, which will be our key argument in talks with the IMF, said the Deputy Prime Minister.
Djelic said he will also discuss the possibility of signing a one-year arrangement with the IMF.
I simply want to say that if we realise this programme, it will not only be a joint programme between Serbia and the IMF, but also with the World Bank and the EU, as a set of measures helping Serbia to show that it is a stable and predictable country worth investing in, said Djelic.
He noted that the Serbian delegation has clearly stated that it expects the international institutions to respect international law when it comes to initiatives for Kosovo’s membership and wait for the opinion of the International Court of Justice.
Kosovo will be neither presented nor accepted in the IMF and the World Bank, just as it was not granted access to any international organisation, said Djelic.
When it comes to Kosovo’s debt, Djelic stressed that Serbia, as a responsible country, is servicing its debts, and consequently those of Kosovo.
