Foreign investors briefed on Serbia’s investment incentives

Belgrade/New York, 25 September 2008

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Regional Development Mladjan Dinkic stated that incentives provided by the Serbian government for investments in the car, electronic and IT industries were presented to large investors in New York.

The Ministry says in a statement that at a global investment conference, held at the Harvard Club in New York, at which Serbian President Boris Tadic was also present, several IT companies showed interest in Serbia.

Dinkic said that it is in Serbia’s interest to attract large US computer and IT giants, such as the IBM, Intel and Dell, to come to Serbia, adding that the Serbian government’s goal is to revive the IT sector in the upcoming period, alongside the automotive industry.

He confirmed that first contacts with the management of the General Electric were established in New York and added that this company’s representatives announced a visit to Serbia in mid-October.

Following the investment symposium at the Harvard Club, we held a meeting with representatives of the General Electric who are interested in opening a locomotive factory in Serbia and want to be part of the project to electrify the Serbian railway system, said Dinkic.

According to him, the General Electric intends to find suitable suppliers amongst Serbian companies from whom it would procure the necessary parts.

Dinkic said that Serbia was presented at the investment symposium as the most attractive country for export-oriented production.

At the global investment symposium in New York, attended by the largest international investors, officials and ministers from all over the world, companies US Steel, Ball Packaging and Spinnaker presented their successful businesses in Serbia and recommended investing in the country.
