Platform for negotiations on dual citizenship with Montenegro adopted

Serbian First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Ivica Dacic said today that the purpose of reaching an agreement with Montenegro on dual citizenship is to make it possible for Montenegrins to get Serbian citizenship without giving up or losing their own.
Dacic said that dual citizenship will facilitate the development of good relations between Montenegro and Serbia, keeping in view historical and other links between the two nations and countries. He recalled that the government adopted today a platform for negotiations with Montenegro on signing an agreement on dual citizenship.
He said that Serbian law allows Serbian citizens to acquire foreign citizenship without losing the right to Serbian citizenship, and added that the agreement with Montenegro will make it possible for Montenegrin citizens to acquire Serbian citizenship without losing their original nationality.
According to Dacic, this would be in accordance with recommendations made by the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly which includes the right to dual or even multiple citizenship among basic human rights.
The First Deputy Prime Minister stressed that this is of great importance because the deadline for Montenegro to define its relations with other former Yugoslav republics expires on October 19.
If an agreement on dual citizenship is not reached, according to Montenegrin law, those who acquired foreign citizenship, in this case Serbian citizenship, after the declaration of independence, might simply be deleted from the Montenegrin citizenship register, said Dacic.
He said that failure to make dual citizenship possible would be great injustice to both Serbian and Montenegrin citizens.
