Germany’s political, economic support to Serbia’s EU road

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Regional Development Mladjan Dinkic said last night that Serbia may count on Germany’s political and economic support to its EU accession process.

Following a meeting with the German Chancellor’s foreign policy advisor Christoph Heusgen and Bundestag representative Gunter Kirchbaum, Dinkic stated to the Tanjug news agency that there are differences in their stances on Kosovo status which cannot be erased and will therefore remain, but added that this should not impede cooperation between Serbia and Germany in other fields, primarily in the economy.

He said Germany will play an important role when the EU starts deciding on the increase of pre-accession funds for Serbia.

Dinkic noted that he called upon his collocutors to help Serbia achieve its goal and become ready for the EU’s 2009 budget rebalance, as well as to be granted larger pre-accession funds beginning from 2010.

According to him, his collocutors agreed that in the upcoming period Serbia may become a stability factor in south-eastern Europe.

Although we differ in our stances on Kosovo, I believe that our economic development and the pro-European orientation will help us improve the standard of living and in that sense I expect that we begin implementing first multi-ethnic projects in Kosovo. We wish to start solving problems of the population in Kosovo with the EU’s help, said Dinkic.

The Minister said that during his visit to Baden-Wurttemberg, one of the economically most developed of German provinces, he reached agreement with president of the province Gunter Oetinger to form a mixed business committee which will help to improve economic cooperation between the German province and Serbia.

Summarising the results of his visit to Germany, Dinkic highlighted the development of the Serbian car industry and attracting serious German investors who will hire Serbian citizens, enable export growth, inter-state cooperation with the aim of modernising the Serbian rail road and support Serbia’s EU accession process.

This support will not only manifest in shorter deadlines but in greater financial endorsement to Serbia’s economic development, said Dinkic and.

Today, together with Serbian Minister of Trade and Services Slobodan Milosavljevic, he will open the Serbian stand at the Automechanika car show in Frankfurt.
